The Hubert Bals Fund and the IDFA Bertha Fund (formerly known as the Jan Vrijman Fund) join forces in organising a special film festival tour through Africa. The Cinema Mondial Tour brings fiction films and documentaries supported by the two funds to film festivals throughout Africa.
The Hubert Bals Fund and the IDFA Fund support remarkable and urgent fiction and documentary films by talented filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. With this special tour, the funds hope to contribute to the visibility of these films in Africa. The Hubert Bals Fund is part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The IDFA Fund is an initiative by the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
Successful Cinema Mondial Tour continues...
The Cinema Mondial Tour in Africa, which started in July 2010, returns for a third season (see programme below) in 2012-2013 with a new programme of feature films and documentaries from Africa, the Middle East, the Far East and Latin America. In addition, new festivals in Africa have been added to the existing programme.
...now also in Northern Africa and Middle East
Following the success of the first two editions, the Hubert Bals Fund and the IDFA Fund intend to widen the scope of the Cinema Mondial Tour with an expansion to a number of countries in Northern Africa and in the Middle East. To achieve this goal, the funds have set up a new collaboration with NAAS, the Network of Arab Arthouse Screens.
In 2010-2011, the first programme
consisted of twelve films, screened at festivals in ten African countries and was seen by some 8,000 African film lovers. The collaboration between the film festivals in Africa, the Hubert Bals Fund and the IDFA Fund led to the support of other film and documentary projects such as seminars, workshops and open-air screenings. At the Zanzibar International Film Festival, the funds contributed to a special festival programme in which the festival travels to the province and organises open-air screenings.
For the second Cinema Mondial Tour
in 2011-2012, the funds offered the participating film festivals the opportunity to request financial support for the dubbing of films from the Cinema Mondial Tour and the addition of these films to festival programmes in rural areas. The second tour was screened at eleven film festivals throughout the Africa continent and reached an audience of 30.000 film lovers.
